Ayngaran are now producing films for the NRI audience about issues relating to us (following success of Indian-independant films). The plots sent to me by them through e-mail really looks intresting and I hope the films are as good as other NRI films (bar the awful American Desi & Bollywood Calling). The first from a couple of forthcoming titles is shown below...

Mitr - My Friend:
Set in USA, this film looks at a young 15 year American South Asian girl being over-protected by her Indian mother from the western Culture. The mother feels quite scared that her daugther might go into the stereotyped western life of drink, drugs and sex. This causes tension between the mother and daughter, as the young girl just wants to lead a normal teenage life.

This film has just finished production and will be on limited releases in USA and UK only in MAR 2002. The film is shot mainly in English but will have subtitles during a couple of Tamil scenes. The DVD will come out in a couple months after the cinema release. I will pursuade them to make this DVD a DTS and DD 5.1 one!

I'll also see if I can find a trailer URL link somewhere on the internet then post it here, as it is quite good.

if im correct then i saw a brief insight in to this movie with actor interviews and songs on B4U Raw...the film most certainly looked interesting....it has music by Illayrajas daughter...am i thinkin of the right....film about a couple who move to yankeeland and the husband is a big time business man...the young girl is actually played by a real american girl...the director wanted this becuse she said it was important as someone who lived in America had different body language e.t.c

Yeap it sounds like the film. An intresting tidbit: The film is directed by Revithy who was the actress in Ram Gopal Verma's Raat & Shyam Balaj's Love.

I am hoping the film will be sucessful as the exe. producers are intrested in financing a Tamil-English film set in London, Walthamstow (near me!) about a inter-racial relationship. They wouldn't reveal anything more to me but sounds like a good idea.

Rumour has it that there are no takers for this film as the the releasin company is asking for $16/- per disc. Hence the release has been delayed. Superdigital says it is comingout on the 27th. Vendors say why they should pay 16 from a never heard of company like vista india or somethine like that. Yash raj charging that rate is ok as they are known to make good films( i am not sure of their dvds)
But if they stick to their guns and not compormise on the price they will in time be accepted or end up like eros.

I am looking forward to this film. After years of watching trashy unrealistic indian films, I look forward to more english indian films.Films that one can relate to. Lived all of my life in big city, used english, hindi and tamil in my daily conversations. American Desi was hilarious. It was fun light hearted movie and I could relate to it. You find Bollywod calling awfull. hmm well i think it was good effort. Bollywood workings can be very hilarious. It was quite tru in the way bollywood was depicted. Also I nagesh Kuknoor did a great job but suspectif he really did direct the film. If you have seen Hyderbad blues or rockford, and compare it to BC, it is night and day.

I was in the bay area when they were filming Mitr. heard they lost the cameras while shooting and struggled to complete. Hope this movie is received well. Revathy is a good actress but will have to see if she is a good story teller.

I'd wait for the Ayngaran DVD version which will be released (May 2002) in its original English -Tamil langauge. I saw the film on VHS and found it to be avarage. While the plot was intresting, I felt the acting too be quite wooden in places and direction a tad too sloppy. Still worth watching once.
