user has now "taken back" his comments after trying the 5.1 audio option (user was earlier "hearing" the 2.0 audio)

the default audio is 2.0 on the DVD -- which is pretty loud and strong. If you haven't already tried, try switching to 5.1 option which to me sounded fairly decent (though not as loud as 2.0).

LOL.. I kinda realsied last night and was just about to post the same thing you stated above NEwDeep.. the 5.1 is much better. I didn't realsise the default audio was 5.1 until I went into set up... doesn't help when you get your amp displayis set to auto off... I take it back he sound isn't as shite as I said.

true!

I played the DVD again -- and the 5.1 is very decent! With good genuine 5.1 separation :-)
I'll suitably edit your post above.

Thirteen years into the life of the format and Indian DVD authorers still cannot get the basics right. Shamefull is all I can say.

i agree to an extent, but then there's this large population that simply plays off a dvd player connected to a t.v. (where 2.0 seems to work best, and if done properly, can sound better than the downmix.)

Yeah, but if they're playing it off their TV speakers why would they care if the 2.0 track sounds better than the downmix?

I am sorry but somehow I just cannot fathom the logic of reducing everything to the lowest common denominator. This is another one of those things that seem to envelop all spheres of life in India. Logically atleast BDs/DVDs ought to be mastered to the highest standards permissable by any format and not the other way around. People who do not have the equipment to utilize the features of a format, should be the one's required to have to switch audio tracks etc. This is not in any way being elitist, it is quite simply the way the world works.

Most Hindi movies now are released with DD audio only and thus I suppose DVDs follow the same pattern. DTS on the other hand is more popular with film makers in the south, which is reflected in their DVDs too.

sanjay i don't think that's the reason. dolby digital is cheaper to incorporate, and to make your DVD home-theatre-ready, you do need at least one 5.1 standard, which everyone seems to incorporate dolby digital as a necessary/ least requirement. down south, there are more passionate / more aware fans, and so dts is also offered.
