Hi,

I just watched Fiza this weekend. I liked the story and the music was good. I am just curious for those who have seen this flick, what their opinion was.

Since I just recently watched HDDCS, there were such contrast between the two films. I wished that I watched the films in reverse order, so that at least I would be left with a more colorful and cheerful (despite the fact that Salman Khan's character Sameer got his heart squashed) after effect. I enjoyed both films. Obviously they are very different.

Anyways please share, share, share.

wow! you actually saw similarities between the two films. I mean, there could be, but I never personally thought about it. MAYBE!

But as to how i felt Fiza was, good film overall, quality performances by Jaya Bachchan & Hrithik Roshan. Although, Karisma Kapoor's character wasn't too convincable to me, a villager girl whom where's very modern clothing and knows how to club dance. Not too believeable if you ask me. Also, A.R. Rahman's version of "Piya Haji Ali" is a quality song.

Oops, sometimes I am not good at communicating.

I thought the films were very different. What I wanted to say was that HDDCS was a colorful film while Fiza in contrast was a dark and serious film. That's what I noticed and I wished that I had watched HDDCS first simply because its not as depressing as Fiza.

I agree with your opinion about Karisma. There were things that the character did that just didn't make any sense to me but then again Hrithik's character was sporting the latest fashion as he re-appears in the film. I guess that's where I got confused, Karisma character really threw me off especially the bar dance sequence. I actually laughed. But Jaya and Hrithik were amazing.

100 % agreement on the song. :D

Both are decent flicks in thier own right, I found HDDCS a lighten flick which entertains while Fiza keeps you on the edge of the seat with its powerful performances.

Fiza however is a weak film when compared to better film classics like Roja and Bombay, which deals in similar themes (IMHO).

FIZA, obviously, had more than its share of flaws, but the message and theme it was trying to convey was not lost at all, IMO. BTW, I felt Karisma Kapoor was amazing in this role; the bar dance sequence was horrendous, I agree, but this was a scripting error, not her fault. Equally amazing were the other two actors (no way Hritik deserved the Filmfare Best Actor award for KNPH; defenitely for FIZA though). Oh well, Filmfare is hardly the authoritative voice on awards. My overall rating - 3.5/4

As for HDDCS, I loved it the first time I saw it; I gave it a perfect review (4/4). However, over time, I think it's slowly grown weaker in my eyes. There is much to be liked here including Aishwarya's best performance (although sometimes too much in the beginning; excellent in the second half), the costumes and sets. However, Salman Khan was horrendous in the first half of the film, and I don't know what the hell Sanjay Leela Bhansali was thinking when writing in that supernatural father and son conversation from the skies. As well, the movie could have been cut easily by a half hour, but the film still remains close to me. I lowered my rating to 3.5/4.

I always compare this two films technically especially the cinematography in particular. Both have varied style of lighting. Personally I like HDDCS's grand and epic like look. Fiza on the other hand is a bit more subtle but nevertheless facinating.

This is great. I like everyone's impression of the film. I was curious, I am new to the more recent Indian films. I grew up with most old films, like Taj Mahal, Barsaat, etc up until the some of the films in the 80's like Nishaan(Rekha, Jetender, Poonam, fat(sorry) Rajesh), Kudrat (Hema & Rajesh)etc.. When we came to US I didn't have access to Indian films so I didn't get to see any of the flicks from the 90s. But recently with the net and dvds and my Indian friends I again am glad to be back to watching Indian films.

My first breakthrough into the current film scene was Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. I love this film. It was loaned to me by someone from work. Since then I've been trying to find any info on the current movie scene in India with new stars like Aishwarya, Hrithik, Salman Kahn, Maduri, Aksahy etc... This forum is awesome for getting info.

The reason why I hesitated to get into the current scene was that I didn't want to see Indian films with very heavily "western" dance sequence and songs. That's why for a while I only prefered older classic films like Pakeezah, Dushman, Seeta aur Geeta, Bobby, etc....HAHK was a great delight and proved that good Indian films are still there that are not heavily westernized.

Thanks for the inputs. By the way, what's up with Salman Khan. I thought he was horrible in HDDCS. Don't get me wrong he was highly entertaining on some level but his performance seems rather awkward. How do people most people feel about him? I do like him just wondered why he was that way in this film. :D

Sunny...in my opinion, Bombay wasn't such a great film either. It wasn't bad - but it had as many flaws as did Fiza - especially some pretentiousness. But Fiza still beats Bombay in technical aspects.

I disagree the technical aspect (mostly its cinematography) in Bombay has to be one of the best seen on Indian cinema, while Fiza seemed to rip certian shots from it. I also believe the story of Bombay is more touching especailly when the two young boys become lost during the riots. I admit there are flaws, but every single film on this planet has flaws. To me Fiza (2001) had more flaws then Bombay (1993) within in its content [imho].
