Check it out at

I think a nomination itself will be the best thing to happen. Hopefully we'll see a commercial release in the US then!

Sony Classics bowled over by ``Lagaan''
By Charles Lyons

NEW YORK (Variety) - Sony Pictures Classics has taken domestic distribution rights to ``Lagaan,'' India's entry for the foreign-language film Oscar.

Winner of the Prix du Public award at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, ``Lagaan'' already has played in the U.S., exclusively in theaters catering to Indian audiences. The studio plans to release the picture nationwide this spring.

Set in 1893, ``Lagaan'' is a romantic epic about the village of Champaner. The residents' economic fate hangs on a game of cricket with British soldiers.

I think LAGAAN's entery into top 8 finalist! is a BIG TIME victory for BOLLYWOOD industry!!

I wish it should enter into top 4 or 5 finalist and we should see Aamir and Ashu the Director sitting in Audience competetors in Oscar function, it will be a great HONOR , not for the INDUSTRY, but For Aamir and LAGAAN!!

BTW!! I am a bit skeptical for LAGAAN winning the OSCAR!! TOUGH competition, But!!! Entery into finalist will be a BIG time ACHIEVMENT Any WAY!!

Now for INTERNATIONAL release, is it going to be dubbed in ENGLISH!! or Hindi with English subtitles..Any one?

If dubbed in English, the hopefully another DVD, ? 2 Disc or UK edition in MAY!! cming out with full galore 2 disc version..

May be we in US!! can get a BOOTLEG? what do u think ALI!! :p ;)

I doubt it will be dubbed. Ashutosh Gowariker has been insistent on people seeing it the way he has made it, with songs, length et al. I doubt he and Aamir will dub it. Heck if 'Crouching Tiger...' can be seen in the original format why not 'Lagaan'. Sony Pictures wanting to do an Americas release is indeed great news. All it has to do now is make it to the nominations, then the publicity it generates will be marketing material enough. May not catch on like 'Crouching Tiger...' but who knows. It is the day and age when firang audiences are receptive to things different and unlike what pundits back home think, the cricket angle will ignite more curiosity than anything else.

Go Lagaan !!

As much as I'm pulling for "Lagaan" to win, I think "Amelie" has the best chance of winning Best Foreign Film.

I second that... Lagaan will miss the nominations, but what it will do is generate an interest in mainstream Hindi films. There are other classy Foreign lang films that will be nominated...

Better luck next time :)

Maybe Lagaan can try and get nominated for a few awards at the BAFTA ! :D
