Hi,
There's lots of stuff about piracy (implied quality issues) on this board. But I haven't seen a clear discussion on what criteria people have to buy dvd's, primarily desi dvd's, but others as well - so here goes.

1. What is the general price level where you'll pop for a dvd?
a. $1-5
b. $5-10
c. $11-15
d. $16-20
e. Over 20

2. What is your main criteria for purchasing a dvd if you haven't seen the film before?
a. Stars
b. Packaging/poster design
c. Special Features on DVD (making of, interviews etc)
d. Extra goodies like a soundtrack album
e. Saw trailer on TV
f. Word of mouth recommendation
e. Timepass - taking a risk

3. Criteria for purchasing a dvd if you *have* seen the film already?
a. Loved it, want to see it again and again
b. Explore bonus features like making of, interviews
c. Extra goodies like a soundtrack album
d. As a gift for someone
e. Just for kix

4. All else equal, how important is quality of the dvd itself for you? Pick all that apply.
a. packaging must rock (foil enhanced, digipak etc)
b. dvd transfer must look great (direct from film, color corrected)
c. dvd must work with digital tvs (widescreen enhanced for 16x9)
d. bonus features are absolute must, deleted scenes etc.
e. none of these are important

5. How important is price for you?
a. Will pay upto $20 for top quality dvd
b. dvd must be around $15 no matter how good it is
c. will give up quality for price closer to 10
d. rock bottom - under 5 is what i want!
e. i only rent dvds, never buy them

6. Where do you like to buy/rent your dvds?
a. online - which sites are dependable?
b. retailers - which ones do you consider dependable?

Well, that's it for now, would like to see what people have on their minds.

Nikhil ???

$5 to $10, though I will occasionally go as high as $15 if it offers something interesting.

2. What is your main criteria for purchasing a dvd if you haven't seen the film before?

c. Special Features on DVD (making of, interviews etc)

Word of mouth, reviews, and filmmakers involved are factors for me when buying a DVD sight unseen.

a. Loved it, want to see it again and again. Most Indian DVDs don't have extras worth watching even once.

4. All else equal, how important is quality of the dvd itself for you? Pick all that apply.
a. packaging must rock (foil enhanced, digipak etc)

As long as it isn't in a paper bag I don't care. I prefer Amaray cases, though.

b. dvd transfer must look great (direct from film, color corrected)

Of course! The quality of the experience is as important as the film itself.

c. dvd must work with digital tvs (widescreen enhanced for 16x9)

Important. Might as well have a DVD that will look good in the future. Besides, if a DVD looks good on high end systems, it will also look good on lower end and midgrade systems.

d. bonus features are absolute must, deleted scenes etc.

With Indian DVDs, as long as the transfer is good I am happy. "Making ofs" on Indian DVDs are usually 1/2 promotional fluff and 1/2 film clips. American DVDs without extras had better be cheap because there are so many inexpensive DVDs with plenty of extras (Finding Nemo for $14!)

e. none of these are important

5. How important is price for you?
a. Will pay upto $20 for top quality dvd
b. dvd must be around $15 no matter how good it is
c. will give up quality for price closer to 10
d. rock bottom - under 5 is what i want!
e. i only rent dvds, never buy them

The most I've paid for a DVD is $35 for the Criterion version of Do the Right Thing. For Indian DVDs I paid about $20 for Lagaan, though I had a gift card, so I paid very little. Mostly I want to pay no more than $10 for a DEI/BEI DVD.

6. Where do you like to buy/rent your dvds?

I rent from local stores. I haven't bought an Indian DVD in a very long time, but I've bought from local stores and online.

For current state of Indian DVDs, $5 to $10 ($ 9 to $ 15 Cdn) though I will occasionally go as high as $15 if it offers something interesting.

It also applies to having seen a film on video and then watching it in theatre if possible.

More than Extras, DVD must contain at least the original theatrical version. Cuts made afterwards to fasten the pace of the film must be put back in. We all have an option available in the DVD player to fast forward boring portions of the film.

6. Where do you like to buy/rent your dvds?

I haven't rented for a long time. I wish I could inspect disc media and DVD authoring before buying.

THE MOST IMPORTANT CRITERIA IS FOR THE DISC NOT TO DEVELOP DISC ROT UNTILL 5 Yrs after HD-DVDs BECOME AVAIL.
