Hi

Am I correct in my assumption that Shermaroo make the best Indian DVDs after DEI?

If so, can anyone recommend some of the better releases by Shermaroo titles (old or new)?

Thanks

Shemaroo's Subhash Ghai collection was released recently and is definitely better than their older releases. All Subhash Ghai collection is Pseudo-Progressive, indicating Direct Film to NTSC transfer. Many other recent releases are Pseudo-progressive too.

Among the older releases, I found SSS, Bobby amd Mugh-E-Azam Pseudo progressive. Shemaroo's newer batch of Paakeezah too is Pseudo Progressive.

Pseudo Progressive DVDs are preferable to Field Averaged (Film to PAL to NTSC transfer) DVDs.

Same old thing again. Tried to post it 5 - 6 times, nothing worked. Strangely, it succeeded twice, without me knowing it.

So far, marking “Enhanced for smooth viewing” does not relate to Pseudo-prog or Field Averaged encoding.
There may be some clues from Bombay Music Sticker, Date packaged, where bought, etc.

Here is the grouping of 20 or so Shemaroo DVDs that I have:

1)
Satyam Shivam, Sundaram
Mughl-e-Azam
Bobby
Sangam

Bought locally from retailer. Cheap. Bought late 2001- early 2002.
No inserts.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Rs 750
Pkd 5/2001
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = No

PQ:
SSS, MEA, Bobby are Pseudo-prog.
Sangam is field averaged.

2)
Shri 420
Prem Rog
Awara

Bought locally from retailer. Cheap. Bought late 2001- early 2002.
No inserts.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Rs 750
Pkd 6/2001
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = No

PQ:
All are field averaged.

3)
Paakeezah

Bought locally from retailer. Reg price. Bought late 2001- early 2002.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Rs 750
Pkd 5/2001
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = No

PQ:
Field averaged. (Arsh says his copy is Pseudo-Prog)
(Arsh's copy of Paakeezah seems to be different than mine. His copy has a sticker, mine does not. His copy is Pseudo-prog, mine is field averaged)

Update: Arsh's copy is a newer version with new encoding. Prefer Arsh's version.

4)
Bullet
Chor Chor

Bought from IW. Reg Price. Bought late 2002- early 2003.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Covered with BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes

PQ:
Both field averaged.

5)
Kaajal
Afsana Pyar Ka

Bought Locally. Reg Price. Bought early 2003.
Inserts: NO.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Covered with BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker.
(Kaajal cover is not sharp??)
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes

PQ:
Afsana Pyar Ka is Pseudo-Prog but very bad PQ.
Kaajal is Field Averaged.

6)
Saudagar
Tere Mere Sapne
Hero
Karma
Karz
Sadma
Ram Teri Ganga Maili

Bought from IW. Reg Price. Bought early 2003.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Only TMS Covered with Shemaroo price sticker (instead of BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker). Pkd 1/2003 (Sadma Pkd 9/2002).
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes
All in this group without doubt, Indian Shemaroo.

PQ:
All Pseudo-Prog.

7)
Chhupa Rustam

Bought from IW. Reg Price. Bought early 2003.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes

PQ:
Pseudo-Prog.

8)
Jab Jab Phool Khile

Bought from IW. Reg Price. Bought early 2003.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Only TMS Covered with Shemaroo price sticker (instead of BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker). Pkd 10/2002.
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes

PQ:
Field Averaged

9)
(Arsh has Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na. Arsh will give further details. Arsh found it Field Averaged. )

Rana

Update on Mar 27, 2003.

Looks like the corelation is Date of encoding. Newer encodings are better. For example Paakeezah newer version is better. Similarly newly released Shemaroo DVDs are mostly Pseudo-prog and better PQ.

I have the enhanced version of Pakeezah - pretty good quality in my opinion, although it doesn't beat the Channel 4 showing on TV in UK. I believe Shemaroo also authored The Great Gambler - really dirty source with marks right in the middle of the screen!

Based on the positive views regarding Shemaroo on this site, I would like to get hold of more copies but they seem generally unavailable or unjustfiably expensive.

Did they fix the horrible noise reduction or is the picture
still an ant hill with occasionally parts floating
different ways as well? Did they improve their noise
reduction on other titles?

i strongly second that shemaroo dvds are second best to dei. I tried their mughal e azam and bobby from indiaweekly and guide, jab jab phool khiley, sangam, pakeezaha and bawarchi directly from india through friend of mine who was visiting to me to shock you all their dvds are available in india for Rs 350 only now

Mhafner, I'm probably not competent to provide technical comments on the Pakeezah dvd but it states that its the ultimate enhanced version with smooth viewing. The sound quality appears to be good and the picture is mostly smooth. There are some insignificant scenes which are grainy or shaky but I think that may well be a problem with the master print. I hope this helps.

Shemaroo only does older Hindi films? It sounded like a pirated distributor. Ditto for Tip Top America.

Shemaroo is certainly good in one thing. They do put life into old worn out faded lifeless film prints. They do have excellent equipment for that (as per their site).

In other departments there is a lot to improve before they can come close to even DEI quality. The following is needed:

1) Direct Film to NTSC transfer with Film mode (Progreive) encoding. Their better releases are Pseudo-progressive (Direct Film to NTSC). They should go one step further and change to Progressive.
Most of their older releases are 'Film to PAL to NTSC' transfers, a 100% No No. If they do master in PAL, they must make the DVD in PAL as well. Shemaroo is smart to know that bigger market is for NTSC DVDs but not smart enough to know that for good NTSC DVDs Direct Film to NTSC master is required.

2) None of their releases is Anamorphic. For widescreen DVDs, Anamorphic enhancement is needed. Even many of the crap DVD makers know this.

3) Proper Audio and Aspect Ratio is also needed.

4) Apart from all this, as mhafner has pointed out so many times for all Indian DVDs, DVNR (Digital Video Noise Reduction) should be used selectively and only where neccessary. Presently it's excecessively used and is used everywhere, whether needed or not.
