Microsoft has developed a new video compression that can show high quality HD video at bitrates similar to current DVD's (between 5-8mbps) - samples can be seen here;

"This technology is causing some excitement, as the T2: Extreme Edition DVD package will include a DVD containing T2 in HD, compressed with this technology. Anyone with a fast PC will be able to watch T2 in high def, no pricey blue laser player required."

though the quality may be an improvement over regular dvd, this is not something to settle for hd-dvd. Even on a monitor you can see an imperfect picture... nice move on MS' part, but I definitely hope this is not all we get in the next few years.

I hope they tone down the edge enhancement on the "regular" transfer on this new T2:SE. Isn't it ironic that the previous SE was called "Ultimate Edition"?
