The tradeoff for Dil Se and Uyire is that Uyire is OAR but dubbed, while Dil Se is original language but cropped. If you have D-VHS deck, you might try combining the soundtrack of Dil Se and video of Uyire to create the ideal, if pseudo-progressive, experience :) Not having seen Uyire, I don't know the quality of the dubbing.

Abhay/Aalavandhaan and Hey Ram were each filmed twice, in Tamil and Hindi, so either one should be okay. Abhay from DEI is a problematic disc for many people. The copy I rented froze up. BMD's DVD of the Tamil version of Hey Ram is 16:9 enhanced but lacks the 4:3 downconversion flag. Sunny has reviewed it on his site. Eros's DVD is cropped, and I remember the quality being only average.

I would recommend waiting for the progressively encoded version of this dvd ! (or for that matter any Ayngaran DVD)

I would never recommend watching the dubbed version of a film as it takes away the original actor's emotions - and of course, the out of sync lips drive me crazy...In the case of Hey Ram, I think the 2 versions are a bit different - you might want to get both.

In terms of Dil Se then I would get the original Hindi language version by DEI. But that version is plauged with problems such as incorrect colour grading, cropped image of 1.77:1 masked to 1.95:1 to hide editing splices, and much wear and tear.

The Tamil version by Ayngaran has the director approved colour correction and is presented from an original 35mm interpositve in anamorphic 2.20:1. However the sound features poor dubbing and is not recommended.

For Hey Ram I would opt for the Tamil BMD version which is uncut, well subtitled and presented in excellent video/audio quality.

Abhay & Aala Vandhan DVD has its ups and downs. Ayngaran version has better 5.1 sound while DEI's has presented the film in its OAR and features decent picture quality & subtitles. The only negative thing about the DEI's version is the quality of the 35mm source used, which was poor and lacked picture clarity. Yet the DVD still is much better then many Hindi DVD titles out there at present. Ayngaran's fault lies in the subtitles which weakens the strong toned dialouges & lyrics.
