Did it get released by Artificial Eye or not? Is it only available on R2? And why isn't Criterion doing it?

The R2 Artificial Eye set was delayed to sometime in February. Columbia Tristar, who released the VHS tapes in North America, doesn't license films out to Criterion for DVD, though they used to do so for Criterion's LaserDiscs. They haven't officially announced a DVD release of the Apu Trilogy in R1.

Then I have to get the R2 version...I don't know if anyone has noticed but Criterion has not done a single arthouse film from India...I seriously hope they consider doing some and stop doing John Woo's over hyped movies

I suppose it depends on the audience. Among foreign film buffs in the US, directors like Fellini, Kurosawa, Eisenstein, and Godard are fairly popular, and I imagine that is why they are so well represented in the Criterion Collection. Aside from Ray's films, Indian arthouse films can't be very well known in among American cinephiles.
