Apart from good video and audio quality (made from original progressive masters) wot sort of features would you like to see on an second Indian bouns disc on DVD.

Please note that it will be seen by Mani Ratnam and G. Srivansan (Madras Takies Producers) & Mukta Arts Pvt. Ltd (Subhash Ghai) who I will post the info too.

hows about:
- MULTIPLE CAMERA ANGLES
- THE CASTING PROCESS
- EXTENDED CUT
- AUDIO COMMENTARIES

--btw just wondering: what difference does it make whether any directors see this or not? they don't control the rights ... :oo:

Isolated Musical Scores for any movie by A.R. Rahman. His score from DIL SE.. is perhaps the most moving one I've heard in an Indian film. Aside from that, I think I would love an audio commentary above all things. "Documentaries" are usually superficial fluff trying to sell us a movie we've already bought. If they put on "making of" footage, they should follow the example of the one hour plus documentary on HUM SAATH SAATH HAIN.

on the sets
but i wounder why indian movies dot show bloopers on the extra disk like english movies do because most of the time they are funny and i know each movie most have some bloopers

I think Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas could have not only made a spectacular Audio/Visual DVD. But also a much needed spectacular supplementary disc Only had the DVD rights fall into the hands of people who know how to make an all-round quality DVD(Hint=Criterion). They could have included the following into there supplementary disc;

- Audio Commentary by Ram Gopal Verma & Gulzar as you view the film (and I say this because both filmmakers admired the film alot)
- Deleted Scenes with director/writer commentary (I'm sure there were scenes that didn't make the final cut)
- Storyboard on how the film was planned (minor aspects of this was shown on its official site, it could have been added to its DVD)
- Additional Ending(s) with director/writer commentary (Need I explain this one)
- Interview with the director (not the cheap shit interviews with SRK, Madhuri or Ash. like originally presented from Eros)
- Web-links
- Theatrical & other promotional materials
- A making feature hosted by the director himself
- Bloopers would be nice too!

And I not only limit these options only for Devdas, I think much of it can also apply to other films as well in general.

It depends on the film being released

But these would be nice to have:

Songs section (multiple audio tracks)
theatrical trailer,
deleted/alternate scenes (explained)
bloppers
Photos (mainly Actresses) :D :D

Aside from the mentioned supplements, I will add:

Interviews with music director and lyricist, possibly including footage of recording sessions and preliminary music.

On the isolated music track, there will be gaps sometimes between musical score pieces and songs. These gaps should be filled in by commentary by the MD.

On-set making of documentary- Like the documentaries on Royal Tenenbaums, Magnolia, or Do the Right Thing (Criterion) where the documentarians were on set during filming capturing the filming.

Retrospective documentary- this is another documentary option which works for older films particularly, but could also work for new films. This is usually comprised of contemporary interviews with cast and crew, with production photos shown. Laurent Bouzereau (spelling in question) is the master of these. Some of his retrospective docs are for Psycho (Hitchcock), Jaws, and E.T., though the latter two are incomplete on DVD.

Costume design and set design stills and sketches- where applicable, such as on Devdas or Lagaan, for example.

Liner essays- Often included by Criterion on older films, but also on some newer films like Royal Tenenbaums.

Screen test videos

Meaningful interviews with cast and crew- none of this EPK promotional fluff we see. We've already bought/rented the disc!

Commentaries should be done in English, but if they are done in Hindi, Tamil, etc., English subtitles should be included.

Fight scene and dance choreography rehearsals and set ups

Production notes- still video screens that tell about the production of the film. Used extensively on T2:Ultimate Edition from Artisan.

Hi there,
not being being a fan of most special features, i would prefer a two disk superbit transfer of the film with proper Dolby Digital - DTS sound.
Since most Directors explain what you are just seeing on the film in that moment, the idea of having two other directors (one that liked it plus one that didn't, would be interesting) commenting the movie sounds interesting.
A more subtle translation of the subtitled songs would be good also.

Some commentaries aren't very good, you are right, but there are a lot of commentaries where the participants tell you a lot about the making of the film. Robert Rodriguez's commentary on El Mariachi, for example, is dense with information. Same with Paul Thomas Anderson's commentaries and Wes Anderson's commentaries. Some older films feature commentaries by film critics or film historians.

With most Indian films being around 2 1/2 hours long, any extras other than a commentary would have to be on a second disc.

A subtitle track with facts about the filming would also be interesting. Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown have this feature.

First and foremost, full feature-length commentaries.
Most of the following are repeats:

Multiple camera angles
Isolated soundtrack
Deleted Scenes (Including alternate endings and maybe seamless branching)
Bloopers
Premiere
Promos
HINDI SUBTITLES - I still wonder why this hasn't been incorporated yet (though I can't even read Hindi anymore)

Most premiere footage, cassette launch footage, etc. is useless. Just everyone congratulating each other. As for multiple camera angles, has anyone seen this used on fiction films? The only one I've seen was on selected songs on Metallica's "Cunning Stunts" where you can select to see one of the band members or all of them. I've seen multiple angles used sometimes as a separate supplement to show storyboards.

Progressive, Anamorphic, OAR good quality Video.
Full bitrate DTS 5.1 sound.
No locking of player controls and no forced ads.
Anything else would be a bonus.

How about DVD Rom extras? I know Devdas dvd would have been a great one if it had dvd rom extras...you know like the stuff on the Devdas Cd Rom i.e. wallpapers, screensavers, picture gallery, web links, etc. Of course adding DvD Rom extras such as those mentioned don't take much disk space.

Other extras I would love to see on indian dvds-
1. Feature/Screen-specific commentary by Director/or Cast
2. Nicely done and easy to navigate menus.
3. Theatrical trailer (esp. on old movies)
4. Isolated soundtracks
5. Deleted/extended scenes and alternate endings

Oh, and a big big request to all dvd manufacturers, get rid of your employees who do dvd coverarts...and hire someone who has creative talent and adobe photoshop knowledge. :doze:

I don't know, why no one has mentioned this, so far, for the extras:

Radio Personality and Walking Film Encylopedia AMEEN SAYANI was a craze in the Radio Days (50s till early 80s). Just like a movie project was considered big if it had music by SJ, a movie project was also considered big if it was publicized by Ameen Sayani. It will be great to include a conversation with AMEEN SAYANI about the film and other chit chat in DVD extras. AMEEN SAYANI still has a huge fan following and I suspect, won't be cheap, but well worth it. I heard him in person, some 2 yrs back. He still hasn't lost his magic touch.

Harish Bhimani is another such person.
