Hi

I recently watched 12B and I have a question about the story that I am confused about. If you haven't seen the film you may not want to carry on reading as my question could spoil the story for you.

Jo's uncle is played by Sunil Shetty - what I don't get is how can he openly profess his love for her and want to get married - is that sort of stuff allowed? Or have I missed something - or were the subtitles on the DVD screwed? (I can't understand Tamil).

Thanks,

Muz. ???

I think its a common trait in South India like it is in other parts of the world. Though I am not sure. Ayngaran was worried about this but they stated that they wanted to subtitle the film according to the original script and not change it dispite it being quite off-key for the western audiences. It was the only part of the film that made me cringe. First cousins marrying each other is another cringin factor in Tamil films (Anadam) but at it widely accepted accross the world as many cultures do that.

Thanks Sunny. Interesting - you learn something new every day :p

I am quite familier with first cousin's marrying - but this really was the first time I have heard of an Uncle - niece relationship.

I was positive that there was more to the plot - maybe Sunil Shetty was adopted - or perhaps Jo was adopted etc. Anyway it kept me guessing till the end.

My one complaint of the movie was lifting scenes from Dil To Paagal Hai and DDLJ. We all know that 12B was inspired by Sliding Doors - but the actual content of the storyline was completly different to Sliding Doors. It was a shame that the train sequence with Sunil was lifted from DDLJ and that the restaurant (Santa Claus) scene was lifted from DTPH.

Anyway - apart from these points it was a good movie with a fantastic soundtrack!

I don't think this custom is prevalent throughout S. India. It doesn't exist in Kerala for example. I know its pretty comon in Tamil Nadu though, and hence the usage "maman" (uncle) by the heroine in many songs to refer to her beloved.

I was quite surprised at how ready Jothika's mom was to marry her off to Sunil Shetty. It was pretty weird. Also, Sunil Shetty can't be that much older than Jothika to play her uncle and Moon Moon Sen's younger brother. Shetty also looked confused in every scene he was in. Or is that how he is in Hindi films too?

Anyone else just abhor the introduction to the song "Jothi Nerinjava"? It totally pulled me out of the film.

Incest is a subject I find very disturbing. I once remember seeing this foreign film on channel four about a son marrying his own mother so that he could be just like his father...they even have a kid together which would make the kid both his brother and son!!! YUCK

I even saw a couple of these awful American talk shows a while back I had to research on for a classroom project on how the media in USA. The shows looked at the subject of people marrying thier own siblings and a person marrying a soft cuddly toy! The world has indeed become a disturbing place!

Speaking of incest and French movies - I remember watching a French road movie years ago about a man who picks up a girl and proceeds to sleep with her in every motel they can find. When he drops her at her destination he finds out that she is his love child from an old flame ... nice :D !
