Hit movies by Indian Standards??
Is there any Hit Hollywood Film??

We all know, how full the North American theatres are that show Hollywood movies. Even for a Mega-Hit Hollywood movie, average attendance in first week is aprox 30 -40% (may be 60% on discount Tuesdays and weekends). An average hit movie gets an attendance of only 20-25 % in the first week. By Indian Standards, these movies costing tens or even hundreds of times more than Bollywood movies should all be declared MEGA FLOPS. Bollywood movies are considered flops even if the collections are 80 % in the first week. (I personally don’t want to go in a show that is more than half full. Be it an Indian Film or Hollywood Film.)

Or, is it just that Bollywood doesn’t know how to gauge success or how to balance books or what revenues to expect with changing times.

There is a totally different set of standards for Indian films and Hollywood films because everyone goes to see a Indian film, they appeal to almost everyone. Hollywood films are divided into different genres that don't cross over so easily. Also I think that Hollywood audiences are on a whole smaller. So the different expectations are needed for both. :thumbs: :

But Bollywood verdict is:

American Desi I think was only a hit in the US. It did OK in the UK, but most people here kept on comparing it to East is East, which I thought was unfair as they are two totally different films!

rana, I don't think Bollywood is in any league to criticise a movie like American Desi, they still haven't reached that standard. But remember they have a different sense of humour.

My comments were for the bollywood gauging system. Hollywood'd Billion dollar earners qualify as flops if you consider that the theatres were only 30% full. Bollywood doesn't know how to collect Hollywood movie type dollars. Their expectations are that the theatres should be 80 to 90 % full to break even. It'll never happen in Dollar land.

Take example of Shakti. Local AMC theatres showed it. Average attendance was 10-15% of theatre capacity. I asked AMC rep, how is this movie doing. Response; better than their mainstream movies. They were happy with the attendance.

What exactly are the standards by which theater collections are judged in various parts of India? Tamil films are usually judged by how many days they run in the theaters.

There are far less screens in India per 1000 people than
in US. Naturally per screen attendance is higher.
A film is a financial success if it makes its money back
and earns some profit. Attendance in % is not a very
relevant measure. Tickets sold is more relevant, total
bo revenues, total costs, revenues from TV and video rights...

A direct answer to the question would be:

- All-time: Titanic
- Recently: Spider-Man, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars

Note that for U.S. movies, high box office receipts is equivalent to repeat viewings, which is one reason why action-adventures (and also films for kids) dominate the list of top films:
