It would be a great idea if we could come up with an extensive catalogue of Hindi dvds together with their manufacturers and a simple 5 stars rating system. This database could contain a comprehensive list of good authored dvds in the market. This will help distinguish which are original and worth buying and which are bad copies!

Any thoughts? :)

I second that motion !!!
I have lots of crappy dvds that I would rather use them as a coaster than to watch them again. A unified data base would have stopped me from buying them (AKS and Bees Saal Baad comes to mind, good movies but very very bad (crap) dvds).

i honestly hate to say this, but looking at the past, it seems like organizing some sort of list or catalogue seem to be the most uninteresting, most complicated task for us ( us? you know who you are! ). ???

i would be more than happy to contribute my words toward dvds if ever such act comes in practice. :where:

I would be more than glad to write and start such a database. I have done similair projects for my clients like BT and Royal Navy.

It could be linked from the home page of zulmi.net. It would be a simple with some 4-5 reviewers contributing to the reviews, but anyone will be able to view it. I think this would be great.

took me a little while to reply but here I am now. :D

I am in the middle of doing something like this at the moment with my website. I am hoping to extend it with other peoples help, but that wont be for a while.

I dont see that big a prob, for two reasons, compared to US movies bollywood dvd come in dribs and drabs we don't have a huge range to add so that helps time wise and there are a lot eager people with lots of knowledge and dvds willing to help... i think, :doze:

It's a great idea but with titles changing brands every other day it will be hard to keep track, for example most of the EVP titles are no longer available so it will no use to list them. Also who will have the final word as to which titles to add to the list as being good as one DVD might be crappy for one and of reference quality for another.

If the system goes into action i will do my part to share my personal experiences.

I am ready to help out with this database if it ever comes into being but I agree with Lakeshore that there would a lot of things to iron out as far as what is good and what sux.

I too, have been wishing if good and bad points from the zulm.net reviews/ previews can be summarised (without screen shots) with links to their review/ previews. It is lots of work. May be some one can put it together??

I'm willing to give it a go too, and willing to start it off. The only prob I have is the lack of DVDs in my DVD collection.

Also how much detail do we put in?!

If anyone is willing to help with ideas whether technical or feature or DVD info, then send us a msg.

Only a suggestion:

I would like something like this:-

Stories & topics:
DVD Preview - index.php?catid=0
Aamdani Atthani Kharcha Ruppaiya DVD preview
Wednesday, January 2nd, 2002
Good- good Dolby Digital 5.1 sound track- forum threads here
Bad- washed out colours, no vibrancy- generally dull video, poor detail, sharpness could have much better- video blurs to a mess on motion, DNR and compression artefacts problems galore- minor source blemishes evident throughout- trailer of AAKR and animated menus show better detail and colour than actual film!- no extras

 DVD Preview - index.php?catid=0
Mughal-E-Azam DVD preview
Saturday, December 29th, 2001
Good- (only) complete version of the film seen on DVD, best DVD of Mughal-E-Azam available so far- generally good detail but spoiled but many other problems...- forum thread here
Bad- extensive wear and tear noticeable on print used- film shakes constantly and is never steady which distracts- compression problems, poor sharpness- excessive noise reduction causing fading/distorting on finer detail, esp on motion- pseudo 5.1 audio, although its one of better one done, doesn't pan the audio to all channels but slight hissing and distortion is noticeable- no song subtitles, no extras
 DVD Preview - index.php?catid=0
Woh 7 Din DVD preview
Friday, December 28th, 2001
Good- none
Bad- VHS like video, soft, blurry and poor detail- damaged source with overly processed video, excessively processed to point where every detail is blurry on movement- badly mixed mono sound panned to all speakers- very poor compression, artefacts galore- mostly weak colours- no extras, no song subtitles- warning: appalling spoiler synopsis on back cover which tell the entire story including ending!

WHAT I DID WAS, pick up list of Zulm.net Previewed DVDs. Transfer GOOD and BAD points from the preview againnst the movie name.

PROBLEMS:
DVD maker or its ID is missing.
Links to previews are missing.
Formatting and Font sizes for DVD names to stand out and rest in smaller fonts etc.

If we had a concentrated list like this, it will definately help a lot in deciding which DVDs to buy or avoid. I don't think it will affect clicks to zulm.net much, as we still will read fuller preview for the DVD that we decided to buy.

There are aprox 400 reviews/ previews available on zulm.net

Looks like, it requires lots of effort and technique.

Just an idea.

I would do it like this:

Create a table with the follwing columns;
Name, Author, Rating.

The rating would be figured on a scales comprising of Picture, Audio, Sharpness, Extras, Source, Color etc.

For everything that they do right, give them a +1. So you would start off with 0 and build upwards (or in Eros, Baba and other such comapnies stay at 0). Thus ending up with a rating such as 0 / 10 (if there were 10 things we were rating).

The name column would be linked to the preview.

In the end you would end up with something like this:
Sample (I couldn't figure out how to incorporate HTML in my post) ???

I hope I explained myself without confusing too many people. This is just an idea. :p

Yup! Good idea. I have started work on it. Just a basic site which links to a database with data. The data can be poulated by 3-4 dedicated reviewers. I am also incorporating a search facility, maybe even screenshots etc. The sample is done is ASP and SQL 2000 (for you techies out there), and as soon as I have a workable demo, I will post the url.
