How's the Baba DVD? Is it in 5.1, or is it mono?

The DVDs are interlaced and are below the quality to that of DEI titles. However thier quality certainly surpasses the likes of any other Indian DVD company (EROS, YRF) and even some hollywood companies (Anchor Bay)

The DVD of BABA is in 5.1 mono. The 5.1 will be done properly in thier special edition, which is not expected until next year.

Have you talked to Ayngaran about this 5.1 mono crap? Mono should be presented as 1-ch or 2-ch because 5.1 mono is a waste of bits.

Are there any other DVDs by Ayngaran that are in 5.1 mono? This is seriously putting me off Ayngaran DVDs - I've come to expect good quality DVDs from them with proper 5.1 sound.

Every Ayngaran DVD of a movie that originally had a mono track has a fake 5.1 track. There was one movie they put out that originally had a true 5.1 track, but has a 5.1 mono track on the DVD.

But do the new Tamil movies have mono tracks? The Ayngaran DVDs that I have seen that I remember having a mono track were Kasi and Dhill (correct me if I'm wrong).

I have not seen Kasi or Dhill, but Bharathy from 2001 originally is in mono.

I think I have to redifine what I mean when I say 5.1 mono. Ayngaran don't really use all of the five channels at the same time when it comes to a mono source. Instead they just use the centre channel for thier mono output. The other channels are used only during songs created from either a stereo source like a DAT tape that was used to sell the soundtrack or a peusdo type mixing to enhance the songs on the 5.1 system.

They don't really do any re-mastering or mixing of the soundtrack that EROS or YRF does on thier older titles which results in a echo-type sound.

Sorry, I forgot about the remixed crap that I heard from Video Sound many years ago!!!

But are any other new Ayngaran titles in 5.1 mono?

A few old titles are in 5.1 mono (really just 1ch mono). But only BABA & Dhill are the two DVDs that was released in Dolby Digital/DTS on cinemas and that have gotten a mono treatment on DVD. Baba will no doubt get a re-release on DVD with its original Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. However Dhill won't due to legal reasons.

Sunny, please post some screenshots of those DVDs when you get the time, especially Baba and Gemini.
