More accolade for Monsoon Wedding
Mira Nair's runaway hit wins Hollywood Movie Of The Year nomination

The Hollywood Film Festival and the Hollywood Discovery Awards are aimed at spotting budding talent among independent filmmakers.

This year, Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding has been nominated for the Hollywood Movie Of The Year Award. Created by The New York Times's best-selling authors and producers Carlos de Abreu and Janice Pennington, the nominations include top notch films like Steven Spielberg's Minority Report, Sam Mendes's Road To Perdition, Doug Liman's The Bourne Identity, Alfonso Cuaron's Mexican film Y Tu Mama Tambien and Joel Zwick's My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Monsoon Wedding won its fair share of accolades and acclaim. Though it didn't make it to the Oscars, it won a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Film. The film also won a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The film
also won the Audience Award at the Canberra film festival in Australia.

The New York Times review said, about the movie, 'Like the monsoon rains that temper Delhi's summer heat, this movie offers subtle surprises." And Rolling Stone wrote, 'Director Mira Nair... aims for pure joy and achieves it.'

For Nair, who has made critically-acclaimed films like Salaam Bombay! and Kamasutra, the idea of Monsoon Wedding came from Punjabi weddings shown in Hindi films.

The film was a runaway success in US and grossed approximately around $13,751 million.

I HATED this movie. This is the worst kind of selling-out film-making that Indian directors do when they have a chance to make movies on an international scale. There are no redeeming features about this film, and the whole 'documentary' feel and the script are really trite. Mira Nair has spent too much time kissing foreign ass to be making crap like this.

I didn't hate it, but I didn't think it was all that great. Perhaps the Western critics are fawning over it because they haven't seen anything like it.

That should actually be $13.751 million, which is approx $14 million and not billion.

Yeah yeah, I think we all noticed that; it was just a simple joke. :D
