When I read about the aspect ratios of various DVDs, it says 2.35:1.

Now the TVs available in the market are either regular TV (4:3 ratio) or Widescreen TV (16:9 ratio).
4:3 ratio is equivalent to 1.33:1
and
16:9 ratio is equivalent to 1.78:1.

When I watch these DVDs on regular TV, I see black bars on the top and bottom.
How this DVD picture can fit in the full screen of Widescreen TV? Will there be black bars in the Widescreen TV also?

Yes but the black bars are smaller on widescreen TVs. If it’s a widescreen film at 1.78:1 (or commonly referred to as 1.85:1) then it will fill the widescreen TV. Most Indian films are usually 2.20:1 or higher when transfered correctly. Some are 1.85:1 like Monsoon Wedding and Chandni Bar. English R1/R2 DVDs vary according to film.

1. What will happen if you watch regular dvd (movie with aspect ratio of 4:3) on Widescreen TV - will it have black bars on the top-bottom and side?

2. What will happen if you watch non anamorphic dvd (movie with aspect ratio of 1.85:1) on Widescreen TV - will it have black bars on the top-bottom and side?

Different widescreen TV have different modes of display. A 4:3 movie when correctly displayed on a widescreen TV will have black bars on the sides only - none on top and bottom.

Similarly widescreen have different zoom modes that will display a non-anamorphic 1.85:1 to full screen.

Any video with 1.85:1 aspect ratio or less can be displayed correctly without any black bars on top and bottom.

Actually, 2.20:1 is the aspect ratio of 65/70mm flat filming. Since most Indian films are shot with CinemaScope lenses, they are 2.40:1. I don't know if any 2.55:1 or 2.66:1 lenses are used, though I doubt it.

Mainstream filmmakers in India unfortunately always use the 'scope aspect ratio, but this is probably because audiences like the wider canvas. If filmmakers like RGV would occasionally shoot a film at 1.85:1, perhaps others will follow suit. All these films are starting to look the same!
