“Nothing can break talent”: Hrithik Roshan

By Sandeep Unnithan

His last two films may have been duds, but boosted by the frenzied response to his shows across UK and North America, Hrithik Roshan is back. Oozing attitude and sporting a new film under his belt Mujhse Dosti Karoge, produced by Yash Chopra and directed by Kunal Kohli, Hrithik Roshan tells TNT Movies he does not flex his biceps in this one.

Three friends, Mujhse Dosti Karoge looks suspiciously like the first half of Kuch Kuch Hota Hain. Is this different film?

Well, nothing is different. Let’s just say everything will look the same, but yet it’s not the same. It’s about well-etched characters where every scene has been tackled with a different attitude. I play the typical boy next door without being too macho—I don’t show my muscles. I haven’t played a character like this.

After the tepid response to your last two films, is the box office success of this film critical for you?

Box office success is very important, but talent is still more important. Nothing can break talent. After my last two films flopped, suddenly my acting was being faulted. My hair wasn’t right, my looks were wrong. I was being called everything from a one hit wonder to the next Kumar Gaurav. And for what? Two of my films (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kaho Na... Pyaar Hai) have made cinematic history, Mission Kashmir and Fiza made profits. Three flopped. Four out of seven is not a bad record.

What movies are you working on next?

I have just two others films. My father’s Koi Mil Gaya and Sooraj Barjatya’s Main Prem Ki Deewanee Hoon. Both the movies are being released next year. In addition, I will also be acting in Farhan Akhtar’s next film, Lakshya along with Amitabh Bachchan.

So what made you agree to doing Lakshya?

Well, it’s Farhan Akhtar’s next film after Dil Chahta Hai, but more importantly, it’s a hard hitting war film—one which shows war in its true light. It’s set during the Kargil War and avoids the usual melodrama and cliches associated with Hindi war films.

Farhan Akhtar's next isn't supposed to have any songs neither.

I think Chetan Anand's Haqeeqat is probably one of the best war films from India.

I'll be looking forward to this one. I hope it will be more critically recognised unlike Dil Chahta Hai.

Yep sounds good. I'm quite a fan of war movies. Lets hope he doesnt get too arty. Thin Red Line was a pile of crap.
