BHOPAL EXPRESS(CINABELLA)

Naseeruddin Shah, Zeenat Aman, Kay Kay, Nethra Raghuraman
English Subtitles. Released by Cinebella.

Bhopal Express explores the true story of one of the world's largest industrial disasters. The 1984 gas explosion at the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal which killed over 16000 people and destroyed the lives of 50000 more. Championed by David Lynch and featuring Nasserudin Shah (Monsoon Wedding) and Zeenat Aman, the tragedy is revealed through the experiences of newlyweds Verma (Kay Kay), a foreman at the Carbide plant, his wife Tara (Netha Raghuraman) and their friend Bashir (Shah). Resolutely political, the film explores the events leading up to the disaster, relives the crucial moment of the gas leak, the devastation left in its wake and the Union Carbide Corporation's refusal to accept responsibility for the tragedy. With Oliver Stone working on a production based on the book 'Five Past Midnight' by Dominique LaPierre, this is a timely opportunity to see the story told before it is reworked by the Hollywood movie machine.

Anwar, did you watch the movie? What did you think?

I thought it was a good film. The storytelling is economical with little wasted time or scenes through which I wanted to fast forward. The depiction of the gas leak and the aftermath is well done and quite harrowing. The relationship between the husband and wife could have been fleshed out a little more, as well as the relationship between the couple and Bashir. The performances by the main actors are pretty good. Is the actor Kay Kay also a singer or is that a different person?

Onto the DVD.

Video

Bhopal Express is presented in 1.85:1 non-anamorphic widescreen. The quality is about the same as most Eros DVDs of new films, with dark scenes not faring well and a slightly contrasty look overall. English subtitles are burned into the print.

Audio

The soundtrack here is PCM stereo, even though the end credits have a Dolby Digital logo. It isn't the best soundtrack but not the worst either. Generally it is somewhat muffled, and loud scenes get a little distorted. An adequate but disappointing track.

Extras

Nada! No interviews, making of, not even a trailer. At the very least I would have liked to see some text screens about the actual Union Carbide disaster. I also am curious as to how David Lynch saw the film and came to present it.

Different people....i believe the actor Kay.Kay is an acronym for Krishna Kumar Menon....it maybe reversed though ie the singer's name maybe that....but one of them for sure.....

Has anyone seen their other newer releases like Adi Shankaracharya and Pestonjee? Are they too like this?
