The DVD to the first part is out and is one of the worst DVDs I've seen in a very long time. I couldn't watch it, its that bad.

What's so bad about it? I was going to get this, but might hold off now. I had read an interview with Anurag Kashyap online that the first batch of DVDs wouldn't even have subtitles to try and combat piracy.

Quote:
I know a lot of people couldn’t understand all the dialogues. But unfortunately, we couldn’t release the film with subtitles. We live in a great country where piracy is rampant. And, I am targeting a worldwide audience with these films. If my film with subtitles gets pirated, it will kill the market everywhere. People who really care about the film will have to wait for the subtitled home videos but that won’t release in the first round. The first set of DVDs will not have subtitles because they could also get pirated.

This surprises me, seeing as he has relied on piracy to get his first film noticed. Added to that, the thought that a DVD won't get pirated if it doesn't have subtitles? :stupid:

Crap DVD made, and Authored by Eagle then repackaged for Viacom 18 for a few international markets. Total crap!

Viacom 18 usually has decent DVDs but with going in bed with Eagle it is a new low!

I was told them samething to wait for the international version but it seems Eagle was the sol author of the DVDs.
Chandna did tell everyone in another forum his company had nothing to do with the this DVD being authored. Too bad Viacom 18 didn't sign on Digital Entertainment to author the DVDs.

Hi
Viacom 18 is not connected with the release of this DVD. Eagle has rights for India video only. Eagle is coming out with BluRay too very soon.
Cant write more about the PQ or who is doing the authoring. I avoided this title myself.
Regards
chandna

Nice to hear from you schandna.

Surprisingly I noticed many new DVDs coming out Progressive and more specifically, most of them were VIACOM 18 DVDs. Some years back when they started manufacturing/ encoding in India, most of the DVDs we found were PAL to NTSC converted field averaged. I guess, with the advent of Blu Ray, where 1080P24 is common, we've started getting some 24P DVDs again.

I'm not sure if all Viacom-18 DVDs are 24P Progressive?? May be they are ?? Any insight into which DVDs or what kind or brand have recently come out Progressive ??

In the DEI/ BEI days, when DEI/ BEI was mastering most of the Punjabi DVDs, they usually were Progressive. But lately, after the demise of DEI/ BEI, and as Punjabi films are gaining popularity, these Punjabi DVDs are all PAL to NTSC converted field averaged.

BTW, are you associated with DVD/ BR companies, other than Viacom-18 ?? Which ones ??

Rana-the old friend of DEI/BEI

We are following the same DEI/BEI tradition here.We try to give the best we can give with the source provided to us.
When we get High Definition tapes we make Progressive DVDs only @ 23.98fps But when we get PAL digibeta as source we cant make progressive while converting from 25fps to 29.97fps.During DEI times I used to get Telecine done in NTSC Progressive directly from Negative and we were able to provide Progressive DVDs. Even during that time No one from India was providing or even knowing about progressive DVDs.

Anyhow I am working for UTV,Viacom18, Big Home Entertainment ( India release, International release, BBC's titles released in India, Sony Pictures,Bennett Coleman ( Times Group) and some other international publishers for DVD and BluRay Encoding and Authoring and HD captures and format conversions for various platforms around the world.

Thanks schandna for the clarification.

Just a few more questions, wonder if you could clarify:

1) You said, if source tape is High Def, then you can make Prog std def DVDs as well as 1080P24 Blu Rays. But, not from PAL or 25 Hz source. Then I wonder:
If Telecine for High Def is done in India, is it 1080P24 ?? as is default in 60Hz countries ?? Otherwise, in India it could be 1080P25 or 1080i50 ?? 1080P25, 1080i50 too are Dig Video standards and I hope Indian Cos don't use that.

2) Assuming that it's 1080P24 standard master for film material, then what about High Def TV broadcasts(excluding film material). Is the High Def TV broadcast in 1080P24 or is it 1080P25 or 1080i50, where 25 and 50 Hz make more sense for TV broadcasts for 50 Hz countries ??

As I understand, somehow for High Def broadcasts, 1080P24 has become universal standard and luckily 1080P25 or 1080i50 is not being used ??

-------------------------------
BTW, out of 12-15 EVP Hindi DVDs, some of them are from PAL or 25 or 50 Hz source and the DVD encoding is Pseudo Prog, which is indicated by 5th and 6th frames being the same as opposed to for Film to NTSC Pseudo Prog DVDs where 4th and 5th frames are the same. These Pseudo Prog DVDs have a much better PQ than some other EVP DVDs that are PAL to NTSC converted but field averaged. I wonder if you could do the same for your PAL Digi Beta source ??
