Must give cfredit for one good feature of this DVD/ VCD.
If anyone noticed, the AR is the Theatrical Aspect Ratio.
Remember, EROS DVD is 4:3.
Cut top and bottom of the original 4:3 picture and you have the Theatrical Aspect Ratio of 2.35:1.
Cut the 4:3 picture further from sides as well, and you have the otherwise superior EROS-DEI's 1.85:1 version.
So, credit for the Video in Theatrical Aspect Ratio goes to this Ultra version.

Compared exctly the same shot as in one of the screen caps above with EROS 4:3 Director's cut SHOLAY. Exactly the same frame.
Nothing is cut from the sides in the ultra DVD/ VCD as compared to what is in the most complete frame of 4:3. Also if we check more carefully, the screen caps above have an AR of 2.05:1. Sholay's claim to fame was its theatrical AR of 2.35:1. Nothing is cut from sides in ultra DVD/ VCD, AR obtained is 2.05:1 implies that there is extra picture at the top and bottom as compared to the Theatrical Aspect Ratio.
This is another example of what portion of the frame gets selected for a version, depends on the mood of the person in-charge on a given day. Even the same person (Director) picks diffrent framing at different times. So, is there such a thing as Original Aspect Ratio??. I don't think so.
For this reason I want to see additional picture, if available, instead of the black bars. Additional picture only in the space wasted by black bars. (There is no wasted space in 1.85:1 Anamorphic DVDs. There is wasted space in 2.35:1 framed 1.85:1 anamorphic DVDs. There is wasted space in 1.85:1 non-anamorphic DVDs).
