Rana,
Agreed!. It's a crying shame, it took an outsider to give us such an an excellent quality dvd.

What about Dil Chahta Hai dvd, Rana? Is that also from progressive source?

I forgot about DCH. I am not sure if it is from progressive source.
This is what Ali said about DCH DVD:

"Preview up;
http://www.zulm.net/article.php?sid=346
... this has to be one of better Indian DVDs to come out in a long time. The quality is very good - only downers being the slight compression artefacts (and maybe DNR effects) evident - but its a film that’s over 3 hours long and Spark have done decent enough job with film on one disc and extras on a second disc.

Ali"

I think, somewhere, Ali said, it was not from progressive source. I may be wrong.

I wonder if Ali could clarify this please.

Thanks.

Rana

That’s a great idea, Ali. Let’s see, using the same disc space, how a 4 hr DVD done by a Hollywood DVD maker compares with a 3 hr DVD done by the best among the Indian DVD makers. Michel has often mentioned excessive DVNR. Perhaps that is not the case in CT’s LAGAAN. Also, I am certain, CT’s LAGAAN picture is not squashed.

Thanks.

Not got either pirate of Lagaan & DDLJ - I will do a new style review of Fiza and others when I get more time.

As for Fiza being better than Lagaan - I'm not too sure. This Lagaan DVD is good - the fundamentals are right which DEI couldn’t manage on Fiza DVD- But Fiza DVD print is cleaner, and has that much better compression due to slightly better bit rate - but the image on Fiza doesn’t look as sharp because of DEI infamous sloppy noise reduction - the image at time has that fuzziness about it which is not that apparent on the Lagaan DVD. Lagaan on the other hand suffers from compression problems on fast moving scenes when the picture becomes hazy and loses detail.

I think Fiza was very first review I did on zulm – and if I rated it again I’ll still rate the DVD 8/10. Fiza and Lagaan are both some of best Indian DVDs available – and each have flaws but I still rate both 8/10.

For sheer quality sake!! I agree give and take!!

But again i expect CT to give us a better quality product than DEI or any body else with their own shortcomings and compression problem!

Well! seems like Faddy have both version of DDLJ and Sunny might come up with LAGAAN comparison!!hopefully

Rogers Video Stores in GTA will have Lagaan DVD as of Jan 22 as a 2-day rental.

The DVD is available for sale on their web site for CAD $34.99 (plus S&H).

Here's the link

I think its all about expectations and I'm happy with the verdict actually...If DEi had done the same dvd, everyone would have said it is the best Indian dvd.

The R1 DVD I has didn’t have them either - so either they were pulled from the production of DVD or there are hidden as Easter egg extras – I haven’t got the DVD to hand to check. But also it just could be false info being out.
