Thank you Arsh and Rana,
But I need some comparison with other DEI titles like Soldier or Raja. Keep in mind that I don't care that much for crapping as much as picture quality. What about the sound quality? How does it sound? Is there any activity in rear channels?

Must be the annual Sholay DVD inspection :p – here are full size unaltered screen shots from both DVDs;

..compared to other DEI DVD this is pretty bad - probably the worst they’ve done. The video is overly dark and grainy - add to that the excessive noise reduction and it looks a mess on the move. The dark transfer is typically of earlier DEI/Eros titles but this Sholay seems to come of the worse. Having said that B4U one is just as crap (but on different accounts). Picking between the two is like asking with which pile of turd you prefer ???

Thank you very much Ali. Now I know why you gave the Video ratings of 4 for both. I like the DEI version a tad better than b4U version. Just like you said

ganti, i too have the EROS/B4U version i got from Indiaweekly over a year ago. I hear some kind of audio static disturbance almost every few minutes. so, I never cared to watch it fully. Does your EROS vesion have same problem with the audio?

Thanks!

Well!! I just spinned my two discs!! None are GOOD either! as ali said!

BUTT!!! i'll edge towards DEI for BETTER colors, even a bit dark picture , Sound is more discrete in all 3 front channels and shows 448kbps rate! Surround activity is minimal but u can hear that, overall, sound is cleaner!

EROS has washed out picture with quite diff aspect ratio!
Sound is 384kbps..confusing as ever, but kinda noisy as pseudo 5.1 lol..

By default, whatever is available go for DEI version!
or get one!BT! DEI label it as DOLBYSURROUND lol!

Yes DEI on top

On a side note/discussion – how many people prefer the full screen ratio compared to widescreen picture?

I know Sholay is one of the most successful films ever in Indian cinema and certainly the most famous but I don’t think it was ever shot for a wide scope viewing - well certainly not as wide as presented on the 70mm format which is think has the ratio of 2.20:1. Looks much better framed at 4:3 (or I think someone mentioned while back that it’s intended ratio was 1.66:1). All this transfer onto 70mm was for the hype and marketing – as it was billed as the 70mm extravaganza, it didn’t actually bring anything more to viewing of the film. I think it would have been a different story if the film was shot from the outset for wide scope viewing. Having said that even 4:3 frame looks too ‘open’. Since everything is 16x9 ratio these days a compromised new transfer would be ideal – 1.78:1 anamorphic that will suit Sholay very well and will look properly framed.

So now I can tell, EROS is in STD aspect ratio, but still does not look right indeed!

Thank you Arsh,
For the conclusion. The DEI copy is on it's way to my home. I may have a better movie night with this one.
PS: I never dared to watch the B4U copy in my theater.

I just bought the Eros sholay dvd just last week because of the alternate ending. I was surprised as I had a VHS of Sholay which was recorded back in 1986 and it had some of the scenes that is not suppose to be in the DEi version.

Also I liked the Eros dvd since I have only owned terrible copies of Sholay like on VHS and a pirated DEi vcd. And judging from the vcd's print DEi has done quite a bad job.

In one of the posts, I had given a "Second by Second" differences between the two versions. All the differences were included and hence that thread incudes Spoilers.

In general 5 or 6 minutes (not any more) difference is due to Higher Intensity version of the film (B4U), not that DEI version is incomplete in any way.
