Silsila was shot on standard 35mm film with an Academy aspect ratio of 4:3 In fact Yash Chopra's first film to be shot in widescreen (Cinemascope) was 'Vijay' before that all of Yash Chopra's films, including a disaster film like 'Kaala Pathar' were shot in 4:3 only.

WHAT!? WHAT!? What the HELL are you talking about (regarding the "disastrous" Kaala Patthar)? Kalla Patthar is freakin' GREAT, and one of Bachchan/Chopra's most neglected films. I, too, love Deewaar and Trishul, but it's sinful how they always cast a damning shadow over the excellent Kaala Patthar. :P :P

:P

Kaala Patthar (1979) was not a hit at the box office (if I remember correctly) even though it was a really engaging movie.

For those who may not know, it was inspired by a Hollywood movie - Lord Jim.

NewDeep, I believe you are right. As far as "financial success" is concrened, I think Kaala Patthar was just "average." (As a film, though, it's great.)

Even, Kabhi Kabhie, Silsila, Faasle & Vijay were financially UNsuccessful during their first theatrical releases.

Isn't it Inspired by a real-life tragedy at the Chasnala Mines in Bihar?
I thought, Yash Chopra mentioned about it in his interview on the DVD OR some where else.

VijayDinanathChauhan, though I think you're right about Silsila (and the rest), I think that Kabhi Kabhie was actually quite successful at the time at which it was released.

look for reviews here, with SS, DEI version was cropped, your newer YRF version is anamorphic, looks very good

Yes, Chasnala Mines Tragedy, but set against the story of Lord Jim (Peter O' Toole). Must watch Lord Jim!
