MPEG is indeed a lossy compression process..but this has nothing to do with grabbing a screenshot... This totally depends on the hardware used (which in this case is a constant factor)...

Here is a comparison between a BENCHMARK "Hollywood" and "Hindi" DVD

Force-Weave Mode in PowerDVD..../ What you will see on your High Definition Digital TV

Auto Select Mode in PowerDVD..../ What you will see on your Regular Interlaced TV

Notice the motion near the Hands...(Ewen McGregor and Ash Rai..) The Image is blurred (Due to motion) but not double images or combing !

Hope this lays to rest the notion that the Devdas DVD is a "Good" DVD :D

DograK pls dont mind this, nothing personal.. But this the very attitude that the Bastards LULLA ( at EROS) and DADLANI ( at Videosound) knows and they will never ever change. It is upto us to accept and reject what is not good and what is good....

Definetly not buying this crap...will wait till this disc gets pirated and buy it then, it will be half the price! I dont want to support piracy but releases like this force people too. Anyhow, tonnes of people have already bought the pirate with removable subtitles, anamorphic, extras and a similar print! Only thing is this movie is a bit longer with extra scenes.

ARSH whats the length of this disc??

Force-weave is a technique which Ganti had inadvertently found, to detect if a DVD was encoded in a progressive or interlaced fashion and since then this has become a benchmark. You will notice that all Hollywood DVDs and DEI-DVDs and a few EROS dvds do not give combing artifacts like the ones shown above (when in a force - weaved mode...or when you watch the film on ur HDTV)... Neither do they give you double images when you watch them on ur Interlaced TV (or using an auto-select option)...

Are you sure ALL Hollywood DVDs are progressive? On Pioneer's "Akira" DVD, I used the crude method of stepping through a frame to see whether it takes 24 or 30 steps to get to the next frame and it took 30. The restoration supplement on disc 2 said that they did the restoration work in 1080i, not 1080p. Can someone post a screengrab or two from "Akira" in force weave mode or will the results be different because it is animated rather than live action?

Got my copy by paying 20 of my precious dollars. And even before opening it, I get to see the shots. I have to say, I didn't expect much better so can't be too disappointed. At least it's not worse than typical Eros :baaa: .

In the 15 minutes i was writing thing arsh posted screenshots that look just like my copy *soft* image...

I just bought my copy at Raaga Superstore in Sunnyvale California. It put me back $26.99 *ouch*
The two DVD comes in a 'faux' hard cardboard box about an inch thick that simulates a hardbound book. The owner of the store said that it had just come in that afternoon and he was suprized because he did not expect it till next week.
I can't make screen shots (I have a Mac and they suck for not letting you make screenshots off their DVD player.) But I did a scan of the movie on my DVD player and the image is soft and could be better but it is not terrible, still the image is soft. The Transfer print in parts have spots and scratches and was not taken from a pristine master copy. I haven't even looked at the 'extra' DVD, who cares about the extras, I want a good DVD of the MOIVE!!!
I almost wonder if this is a priate? But it is a pretty lavish pirate if it is one. The expensive cardboard box, the 'eros' devdas postcard, the booklet (similar to the HDDCS two DVD DEI booklet) and the two different chapter index cards. I think it is the real thing because of all these bullshit extras.

The specs on the box say, "DVD-E-DEVDAS, DVD9 184 MINUTES COLOUR / DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 SURROUND / NTSC FORMAT ALL REIGIONS / 16X9 ANAMORPHIC (2.35:1 ASPECT RATIO) / ENGLISH SUBTITLES"

Thanks EROS another great Indian film with a middle of the road transfer to DVD. My guess is they had to 'soften' the image to fit it onto one DVD. This movie should have been on two DVDs for the movie and scrap the BS extras. ???

I seriously doubt that anyone ever looks at the sales figures of any Hindi DVDs and says "Gee, if we had done better mastering, we would have sold more copies".

I think in the case of "Hollywood" DVDs, any differences in quality come from two factors: (1) DVD started out as a "high end" product and then moved to the masses, so quality was acknowledged to be a factor right from the start, and (2) Those who advocated "anamorphic" and "progressive" DVDs contacted the studios (ie those who pay for the mastering) directly to voice their concerns.

There still is considerable concern in the community of DVD enthusiasts about the third issue, i.e. "OAR" (Original Aspect Ratio). The average US viewer buys a new DVD player and then complains about the "black bars". The widespread acceptance of the DVD medium has meant that many new DVDs are being released in two pressings, one "widescreen" and the other "full screen". Ironically, the new reference-quality Star Wars II DVD is one of them - many viewers are going to buy superb quality transfers - with a good portion of the image missing !

The concern amongst the DVD enthusiasts (cf http://www.hometheaterforum.com) is that as DVD becomes the standard format, some releases will only be in "full screen" format.

Although any reader of this forum knows that many Hindi DVDs are released in altered aspect ratio, nevertheless I haven't seen any "pan and scan" releases - probably due to the greater acceptance of 16x9 screens in India and the UK.

Anyway, the point is that probably the most effective way to improve quality is to put together a petition, something that is clear and forceful, but not antagonistic. (There are web sites specifically devoted to petitions...)

MunnaBhai if you will recollect, Devdas was Hyped as a movie that had spectacular SETS and gorgeous Costumes... So I guess the picture quality supercedes the audio quality..

Miyan...awaaz se kya kaam jab kuch nazar hi nahi aaye :D

Should answer your question !

Let me get something straight:

480p(30) is ONLY for DVDs of 30fps video and film sources (such as some Todd-AO films) and 480p is for all 24fps film/video sources (such as DEI's DVDs and Star Wars Episode II). Correct? Or are the 6 extra frames sometimes added to 24fps sourced-DVDs?

and the site says,

Quote:
When progressive scan content that originates from film is stored on a DVD disc it can be called a 480P(24) title, which means that the MPEG-2 video has been encoded as 480 line progressive scan material, with a frame rate of 24 frames per second.

On progressive DVDs, each frame of the 24 frames per second is stored as two fields, right? But the above quote implies that each frame is stored as a whole frame.
