Shemaroo DVDs are produced primarily for the Indian market, because they only have rights to India and therefore since there are no progressive displays in the Indian market, there is not much demand and/or incentive for Shemaroo to do a progressive transfer.

Shemaroo's web site details ttheir equipment and it is state of the art. Very impressive. Only thing needed is Willingness. I bet they don't know that their Bobby and Satyam Shivam Sundaram transfers are better than Sangam, Prem Rog etc. Field averaging is what they consider better and call it "Smooth Viewing". It actually is worst. Bobby and SSS are Pseudo-progressive with no field averaging.
As Shemaroo DVDs are aimed at Indian consumers, I wish they make them in PAL. It is standard for Film to PAL transfers to record 24 film frames in 48 (instead of 50) video fields at the cost of 4% speed shift. DVDs encoded this way are Progressive by default. No expertise required for this.

Going the PAL way for NTSC is not a good idea in general.
First Indian companies often do not transfer from film
to PAL with 4% speed up but create 50 fields from 48 by
repeating 2 fields per second. This gives jerky motion.
Then they have to convert to 60 fields with 2:3 pulldown
or pulldown and field averaging. At the same time they
have to downsample the video to NTSC. This results in
jerky/smeared motion and fuzzy pictures since the
downsampling requires high quality hardware which they
don't have (see DVDs of Yaadein and MDK).
cheers

Michel, what I said was that if Semaroo or anybody else is making DVDs for Indian or/ and UK market, then they should make those DVDs in PAL as that is the format for those countries. Like ASOKA R2 DVD.

I am sure, standard and accepted practice for Film to PAL DVD transfer is to install 24 film frames in 48 (instead of 50) video fields. Video does run 4% faster but has been agreed that it doesn't cause any significant difference in audio.

PAL DVDs with 4% speedup from India would be nice if the rest is ok, but as I said, in India it's also usual do
repeat two fields and that sucks. You can also see it on PAL
TV from India at times.

You made a good choice for:

GHUNROO KI AWAZ, SAUDAGAR , KARMA , KARZ , JEWEL THIEF , KAAJAL , ZAMEER as these Shemaroo DVDs are, most likely, better than what's avail here in North America.

I don't think Shemaroo can match EVP's Progressive Dharamveer (old; no sub-t) or newer release Pseudo-prog with sub-t. Mera Gaon Mera Desh is a toss up as Progressive (old)without subtitles was OK and not as good as Dharamveer. The newer release from EVP, most likely is with sub-t and pseudp-prog. My first choice will be EVP's Progressive, then Shemaroo, and last EVP's pseudo prog version.

The rest Shemaroo are already avail here.

Mission Kashmir: Official DVD by CT is among the best Indian DVDs. Shemaroo won't even come close.

BTW, had you ordered 5 Subhash Ghai titles, 6th one would have been free till Feb 15.

Some screen shots of these Ghai classics taken from the Saudaghar DVD - from the trailers - I doubt the actual DVD are presented the full AR like in the screen shots - more likely there cropped to 1.85:1 – like Saudaghar and 1947 Earth ;

When I select progressive scan mode in one of my DVD players, it shows me double images side by side, but the other DVD player doesn't show me double images..

Why is that?

When will Shemaroo understand that cropping is a CRIME ?? Who uses 4:3 TVs now?? 16:9 TVs are dominant and for that anamorphic DVDs (both for 4:3 & 16:9 films).

They must pillar-box 4:3 films and cropping must be banned.

And if they use PAL telecines, their DVDs must be encoded to PAL.

How do they claim that they have experts then?

I hope Shemaroo is reading our comments and acts accordingly.

A couple of questions - how do you dig out 10 year old threads to reply to  , and why do you think Shemaroo, or any other DVD manufacturer would listen to what we have to say? In an ideal world, this would be the case, but India is the land of 3 (or more) in 1 DVDs - quality means very little to Indian manufacturers, only money matters.

Lol  I didn't know how to conclude my statement, so that's how I concluded it (someone's done it earlier too).

Agreed 100%. Most of them have no knowledge about all this or they don't care. Most customers don't care about the quality. And why would authorers worry as long as their pockets are full? But I've great expectations from Shamearoo :stupid:
