Shouldn’t we better ask Excel, if they want buy the rights and release a good DVD-Box with both versions?
I can’t imagine that EROS would release anything other than their two existing versions in a more expensive packaging.

There are some E-Mail addresses on their web page: http://www.excelhomevideos.com/aboutus.php3

I am not quite sure, who is concerned with the acquisition of rights. This could be the right contact person:

Already wrote to Excel... you guys should write too -- it appears the "want to do Sholay and other titles in style" but the industry seems to be taking the cheaper alternatives. This is what they say (edited by me):
Quote:
...the Sholay rights might have been sold to Moser Baer by Ultra... looking at the quality and short-term approach of the Indian Home Entertainment Industry: God bless the fans of good cinema and our hunt for quality home video experience. Coming back to Sholay, it would be a delight for us to do a Collector's Edition DVD and Blu-Ray with newly created Bonus Features viz. factual reference subs and also the new DTS mix along with a fresh color corrected transfer. And a tribute commentary by Rakeysh Mehra or Ram Gopal Verma or Raju Hirani or even may be the lead (alive) cast of Sholay as group commentary track... but we don't have the rights nor have any intent in getting into another futile/insane chase either! :-(

More from Excel:
Quote:
May sound crazy, but we have been quite lunatic in a market where quality and value comes second to most and having fun too doing it, so much in a country full of Passionate and Movie frenzy - we find ourselves quite lonely here lonely though!!!

(Bollywood DVDs) Parineeta and Lagaan are (rare because of) DTS, and ironically both the DTS DVDs are from Excel, and so are Corporate with the Gaming feature and Banaras with an Alternate Ending feature, and DOR with Director’s Commentary and ‘location hunt’ feature… (Excel) would have loved to have films like RDB, DCH, Omkara and DON with DTS 5.1, let alone the many other features and value additions that are possible to yet add… besides keeping those films in at least Screen Ratios and Dolby5.1 that purist like us would have liked - imagine the picture and sound (of music) to listen in a DTS 5.1 environment on these films and Munnabhai 1 & 2 and many more…

(But) the Indian industry still has only one Aamir Khan and EXCEL pretty finds itself very lonely here!

You guys should write in to Excel too...

Also, we all should head for The Lagaan Blog http://www.lagaandvd.com/blog.php and share our thoughts with Aamir Khan on doing more and more Lagaan kind of editions with movies such as RDB, DCH, etc. and mention mention Sholay, etc too in the same blog -- and encourage him for Excel Home Videos.

Aamir Khan has a lot of clout in the industry and if we can make an impression on him, we'll all benefit :)

Dear Aamir, Thanks for talking about DVDs and Excel again -- We really feel there's opportunity to do Lagaan type special releases of DCH, RDB, dvds AND Blu-Rays, especially with Excel (if the rights/licensing can be managed) -- they always do a damn neat job. Another release fans in India desperately want is a proper and rich edition of SHOLAY, and again we believe Excel are the ones to do that best. Sippy's SHOLAY has several versions -- widescreen vs academy ratio; gabbar living vs. gabbar killed; stereophonic vs mono; 70mm vs 35mm prints; extended cut vs. recut -- and it would be great for someone to put all these versions in one big Lagaan type box. Dear Aamir, you are admired and respected in the industry and we request you to use your good offices for bringing in the much required dvd revolution in India. Thanks and regards, Deepinder_________________For those interested in various versions, see here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=6345

I just got a reply back from Excel Home Videos, shown below:

It is indeed gratifying to receive such emails appreciating Excel’s quality products. We at Excel do try our best to do full justice to the product and to not compromise on quality and contents that we think the customer should deserve. Though the Home Entertainment Industry is under heavy price and quality erosion, but we have maintained our stand.

With regards to Sholay, we do appreciate your concern and would love to re-release Sholay with our creative input and a Collector’s Edition would be a delight for us to do. We would definitely speak to the concerned authority for acquiring the rights of the movie.

Guys make sure you all flood EXCEL Home Videos with emails concerning SHOLAY, only then they will think that we are serious about this. As for EROS, still send them emails as well, I know they wont listen, but its only a matter of cut pasting the email above and you never know.

Having said that - I own all the versions - and I must say that the French DVD (depite being in the OAR) is not really that good. Sorry - but I watched it last week and had to switch to the EROS version as the sound quality on the French version was terrible. Anyway - if I hear anything I will post it back on the board.

I bought the Carlotta R2 French DVD as the Eros one is a blended interlaced washed-out mess, not to mention being in the wrong AR, as you said. The French DVD is miles ahead of the Eros version, and is far and away the best version in the world today. The audio was originally stereo, yes, and the French DVD has only a mono track. But I'm not sure how you can prefer a fake DD 5.1 track in its place, though, with the same audio coming out of all 5 speakers. That's not stereo either. The Carlotta DVD has its problems, mostly having to do with the source materials available to them, I expect. I'm not sure how you can prefer that Eros DVD to even watching static on your TV set. To me it's painful to watch, but then I've only seen the so-called "fullscreen" version and maybe that widescreen 4:3 version is easier on the eyes and ears.

I reencoded mine to NTSC, getting Amitabh's rich baritone voice back to its correct pitch in the process. I also adapted the Eros English subtitles, which aren't too bad, got English translations for the songs, and added that English subtitle track to the DVD. It's now the best NTSC version anywhere.

Hey Sholay fans out there!

What do you guys think of creating a DVD, by combining the video from Carlotta DVD and the audio from the stereo dialogue CD? The stereo audio froom the CD can be upmixed to pseudo 5.1 audio as well. Any thoughts?

Cheers!

Unfortunately, the dialogue CD is sourced from a vinyl recording which varies in speed and is edited differently to the audio from the actual film. Matching the two sources would be very time-consuming, but if anyone has enough time to spare it would certainly make for a pleasing end product.

The Carlotta DVD is PAL, which means it is 4% faster than what it is supposed to be. That's another issue in matching the CD and DVD.

Is the 5.1 audio on the DEI-Eros DVD fake 5.1?

DEI sound was redone as DOLBY SURROUND, second time per Sandish! and was pretty good!

but Carlotta and DEI are the Theatrical versions, they are inferior prints.

The longer directors' cut is better, just needs to be matted into widescreen format, but the only source is Eros/b4u version i think
