hmm,

I cant tell from these whether this is better than the spark dvd, I need more shots of the jaane kyon song which looks atrocious on the spark dvd (the older one anyway, I havent seen the new spark version).

I think it's "grain" not "pixellation" -- looks like DCH was blown up so much (from original negative) that grain is prominent :)

There is no blow up that would matter concerning grain. The transfer is not good. And the film has natural grain. Sometimes more visible, sometimes less. The upcoming new German DVD will be better. The HD will be as good as the negative allows (and better due to digital clean up).

Grain can not be changed unless you use a general filter that processes every pixel in the frame. Digital clean up as done on DCH only affects pixels that are part of a problem area. Basically data is cloned from other frames so grain is not affected. Grain is affected by DVD resolution and MPEG compression. The HD when properly compressed will have grain like the master and you can't see a difference a 24fps.
I might have some full HD frames for showing in 1-2 weeks so you get an idea of what the negative looks like.

You are right that normally, and for newer releases, grain is not affected by digital cleanup.

However, grain has been lost on some digital restorations - such as CITIZEN KANE R1 - http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompar ... enkane.htm

I expect that true buffs (and there are many!) should buy both versions. It is nice at least for the rest of us to have a choice.

An early example of Lowry Digital clean up. Since then they switched to grain management meaning you can have any amount of grain from all to none, as you wish. :D
Lowry is not affordable for Indian films... :(
