just so we are clear, by 'original' cut you mean "Theatrical" cut?
For those that may not know this, actually there are 'TWO' Original/Theatrical cuts of Sholay. That does not make much sense now, does it? Well, Sholay was released/screened with both 35MM (Mono Sound) and 70MM (Six Track Sound) prints. The 70MM print was from day one, a longer cut of the film. There was another, even longer 3rd cut of the film, which included the 'Qawalli' sequence and was released in theatres later on in some parts of the country. Finally there is another cut now with an alternate ending, which actually is the original ending, the one that was not passed by the censor board back in 1975.

Nice. :nopity:

and people talk about RGV not getting it right the first time. so what you are saying is that there are a dozen Sholay releases? I'll watch this dvd first, unless it'll end up at the next film festival....which I highly doubt.

thanks for the info!

It would be great to put the DEI sound on this DVD. that would probably make it the best version of SHOLAY out there..........ANAMORPHIC SHOLAY WITH DEI SOUND....

DEI on top, Carlotta on bottom. I couldn't find the corresponding shot on the DEI disc for the cap of Basanti feeding the horse.

DEI looks better to me on these stills (except for the AR issue).

Surely not - Look at how much detail is lost in the 'Mehbooba' scene on DEI's DVD.

Thanks for the comparison snaps, Dragun. :)

:stupid: I'm with stupids :P

DEI looks artificial. the colors from the screen shots seem somewhat vibrant but it's all artificial crap with a softer picture. the contrast is much better on the new release, and the colors look more natural(for that period?), rather than 'enhanced'.

If you did not answer that before..I believe film is PAL, R2(or R0) ? and 25fps?

Yep, the discs are region 2 and both PAL 25fps. A proper conversion with no interlaced frames (all the screenshots were taken in Force Weave mode).

I'm unable to say which PQ is better. What detail is visible depends on Contrast and Brightness settings at the time of making and then at the time of displaying. At brightness level set on my screen, anamorphic version shows more detail in the Mehbooba song but for other/ many other scenes I see more detail in DEI shots.

For detail comparison, should view each image separately and adjust brightness and contrast to make both images same bright.

With brightness and more detail also come noise. Have to optimize PQ overall. Also depends on how much detail the director (video or film) wanted to be visible associated with how much noise.

We also need to remember, PAL PQ is 20% better than NTSC, all other things staying same. On top, PAL version is anamorphic (33% better) making anamorphic PAL PQ potentially 60% better.

The DEI transfer looks like it has some contrast boosting. Flesh tones go toward magenta/reddish color compared to the Carlotta version. Colors on the DEI generally look more saturated, though on the shot of Hema her sari is more saturated in the Carlotta version. To me the colors on the Carlotta disc look truer, though the image as a whole looks a little "light."

Mehbooba Mehbooba is very dark on the DEI disc. I suspect this is how it was shot originally. That, coupled with the DNR makes it at times hard to tell what's going on. Does this song on the Carlotta disc look artificially brightened?

The sequence on the Eros director's cut DVD is even lighter, so I don't think so. The brightness levels seem fairly consistent to me throughout the film. I personally prefer to have a lighter picture on a DVD rather than have detail lost completely in black like on so many contrast-heavy DEI discs.
