WOW! This is interesting! What a potboiler ...
Someone should make this story in to a movie ... maybe it could be called Son of Aandhi
Anyway - back to Guru Dutt - there's a really good book called 'Guru Dutt: A Life In Cinema' by Nasreen Munni Kabir ... I read it a while ago and I have a copy somewhere but a couple of copies are available on Amazon.co.uk (priced £5.95) or Amazon.com (priced $105
)
I would recommend snapping this up if you haven't already got it - it was a good read - I'm going to find my copy and read it again sometime soon. As far as I remember it charts Guru Dutt's from the early years and each chapter of his life as an adult is described through the making of each of his movies.
Some interesting facts were in this book:
- there was a deleted song (Sahil ki taraf ... later used in Anupama with new lyrics 'Ya Dil Ki Suno') from Sahab Bibi Aur Ghulam,
- Guru Dutt was going to make Neel Kamal with Biswajit and Nanda,
- his first cinemascope movie would have been a Bengali and English film called Gouri, which was to star Geeta Dutt - but this was shelved due to the breakdown of their marriage ...
- he started a movie called Raaz which was shleved and re-made later as Woh Kaun Thi
- Professor was initially produced bu Guru Dutt and was going to star Kishore and Waheeda Rehman
I can't remember whether the book touched on Guru Dutt's relationship with Waheeda Rehman - but I remember that it went in to Geeta's dependency on alcohol.
