Mughal-e-Azam is as classic a film as they come, and its colour incarnation is no different.

But, this reportedly excellent work on 35mm theatrical print or on DVD has not reached North America.

It's simple.

One version is the old Shemaroo B&W MEA.
Another is the collector's edition that Shemaroo came out with about 6-9 months back. It's essentrially the same as the first version. (B&W)

Third and Fourth lis perhaps the same disc, new colored version, one priced for shipment within India and the other for shipping overseas and hece priced differently. I hope I'm wrong on this one and the one for shipment in India is the real PAL version which should be Progressive by default if Telecine was in PAL. Note that EROS colored MEA is PAL to NTSC converted Field Averaged. Most likely, Shemaroo overseas version is really PAL to NTSC converted Field Averaged, just like EROS's.

Shemaroo DVD is NTSC and is Pseudo-Progressive. DVD cover states, "For distribution in India Nepal and Bhutan only"
(But, usual chroma lagging behind luminance problem; hence, pixel comparing routines may or may not detect the 2-3 pull down)

Bit rate is 3.5-5 mbps. Audio is DD 5.1 @ 384 kbps

Shemaroo MEA color DVD has cool packaging and my disc is Super Cool.
FREEZES

Sure, cover says, for sale only in India Bhutan and Nepal. I picked it up in Toronto, paid big bucks, it's supposed to be original and looks original. Disc media is SILVER (may be 5% goldish).

From where I bought it, is my trusted store (I am sure to get a replacement or credit) and he does tell me if it's a pirate. The price I paid for it, it must be 100% genuine direct import from India. If go by the looks of the packaging, it still should be 99.9% genuine original from Shemaroo India.

BTW, as much it did play, PQ is better than EROS. Shemaroo is Pseudo-Progressive and EROS is Field Averaged. Shortly, I'll check the very fine and detailed Floor pattern, in Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya song, visibility in Shemaroo and EROS discs. In Shemaroo it's crystal clear. This sure will distinguish even a 19-20 difference.

On side by side comparison:
There is no comparison. Shemaroo beats EROS by a country mile, even though Shemaroo bit rate is lower (4 mbps for Shemaroo vs 5 mbps for EROS).

Hi !

I rented this DVD by mail and received a DVD+R !

Normally, that would not be so bad if it was a prefect copy, but this one is DVD-5 (ie 4.5 GB).

Am I correct to assume that the EROS DVD is DVD-9 (ie 8.5 GB) ?

If so, then it seems that this place does not have dual-layer-burners and so used DVD-Shrink (or equivalent) to put the movie on a single layer DVD.

Sure, you got a a, first generation or further, shrunk copy of EROS Mughl-e-Azam. EROS M-E-A is Field Averaged. Shemaroo (Arsh, shots please) is Pseudo-Progressive and way better. Both are close to 8 GB on main feature disc plus the extras disc.
