The film begins on the funeral day of RANI MUKHERJEE. The death of Rani worked so well in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - so I think Karan Johar will reprise this again in K3G.
We have to assume that Shah Rukh is much older than Hrithik, probably 8-10 years, the Raichands were not expecting to have a child - so they adopted SRK, but later on in marraige the were indeed blessed with Hrithik Roshan.
So if Shah Rukh is much older than Hrithik - then we can also assume that he has been married. Probably for 6/7 years, with Rani Mukherjee (an arranged marriage - that he wasn't happy with - but agreed because of Father Amitabh - and Shah Rukh's immense respect for him). However, he has never loved Rani, something that hurts him inside. So he keeps himself away for much of time, fighting for the Indian army.
If both Shah Rukh and Rani have been married for 6/7 years, then they will have a child also - Aryan Khan. The apple of Grandpa Amitabh's eye. Who is loved and doted by all the family.
Rani passes away. Shah Rukh returns from the army for the funeral. Hrithik Roshan returns from studies at UK university (hence the UK connection). The whole family is re-united at this time.
Shah Rukh decides to take permanent leave from the army to look after his young son. Hence he is put on the reserve list. He could be called up whenever there is a need.
Sometime later, Shah Rukh meets and falls in love with Kajol, a middle-class working girl. He talks with mother Jaya, and she tells him to get married. Father Amitabh also agrees to an extent. He is reluctant at first - but does indeed agree.
We have a wedding, and some songs, all is well. But then young Aryan takes a liking to step-mum Kajol. Which gives Amitabh the jitters. He gets worried and starts to think that Kajol might be in it for the money. Why else has she taken on another woman's child, and married an already widowed person. And why did she get married so late in life? What was she waiting for?
But the real reason is she is unable to have any children of her own, which was due to an accident, and therefore had trouble getting a good 'rishtaa' - as she did not want to decieve the potential husband. But she does tell this secret to Shah Rukh, and he still agrees to marry her.
Kajol also has a little sister, Kareena Kapoor, who seems to be attracted to Hrithik Roshan - something else for Amitabh to worry about.
Things go from bad to worse, and one day Amitabh flies of the handle, and interrogates Kajol about her intentions. He demands Shah Rukh to divorce her a.s.a.p. He begs to Amitabh and asks him not to make him do this. Amitabh does not listen and reminds him that he is not on of their own. He is adopted. Something that Amitabh never before used to hurt Shah Rukh with.
This makes Shah Rukh sad and upset, so he ups and leaves the family home, taking his wife and kid with him. Amitabh refuses to let the kid go - but eventually has to - as the police is called - and things get heated.
The Raichand family name is even more put in the mud - when a vengefull Amitabh takes Shah Rukh to court for custody of Aryan - a case Amitabh looses.
Then Shah Rukh is called up by the Indian army - as a war is declared on a neighbouring country. He has to go, leaving Kajol and son alone.
He is taken to the border - and gets involved in a heated battle. We have a huge sfx ridden installement here. Then news comes that he has gone missing.
Hrithik Roshan returns from UK and immediatley sets off to the border to look for his older brother. He asks for father Amitabh's help but he refuses.
At the border Hrithik does find Shah Rukh - who is now a total wreck. He also finds his army buddy -Uday Chopra.
They are in enemy territory and try to escape. At this time Hrithik reads a letter written by Shah Rukh. And in a fit of rage leaves him and runs off.
Later on, Shah Rukh is killed by the enemies. But before Shah Rukh dies - he asks Uday Chopra - to take messages to his son, Hrithik (not knowing that he has already read it), his wife, his dad, and his mum. All army people have letters written just in case of this - so he has also.
Uday cant give the letter to Hrithik, who he camnt find anywhere but takes the other letters back home to the Raichands. Each letter has a specific message for each person it is addressed to.
The letter addressed to Aryan, explains to him why he had to leave his family and him in the lurch and fight for his country - in tme of need. Thus enable a young Aryan to understand the love and pride of being Indian!
The letter addressed to Kajol - is much more complex - and comments written in the letter help her on how to cope with lifes coming decisions. What she should do with her life now that he is no longer around.
The letter to Mum Jaya asks for forgiveness for leaving her in the lurch. And that he never once thought the she was not his real mother. That she meant more to him than anyone else. And that he salutes her for taking on another woman's child and loving him as much as she has done.
The letter to father Amitabh Bachchan is not explained in the film. But as soon as he reads it he goes and brings both Kajol and Aryan back into the family. And then goes about looking for Hrithik so he can get him married with Kareena. A love that Hrithik was hiding from Amitabh - because he did not want to hurt him - same way he got hurt when Shah Rukh married Kajol.
However, he is unable to find him, and th family is still not re-united fully!
Years pass and one day - when the young Aryan grows up to be another Shah Rukh Khan - a much older Hrithik returns!!!!
He returns to an ailing father - who is dieng of old age - a mother who has already died. Why has he returned? Where was he all this time? Why did he never return for his mother's funeral? Its all because of the letter that SRK wrote to him. In which he disclosed to him that Hrithik was the true child of Amitabh and not him! That is what made him up and leave. He believed that it was himself the root of all problems. But he returns at the end - has an emotional chat with father - and they all live happily together again.
