I picked up the film on Ultra DVD, and just finished watching it. I must say I was suprised with the picture quality. It seems to be transferred from the original print to DVD. It gives a clean and steady picture, with some damages visible in three/four scenes (nothing major). Now, don't ask me technical details as I wouldn't know, but the picture quality is at least as good as the Tiger Entertainment version, maybe better.

I didn't expect this from Ultra. :)

Cool! Where did you pick up the DVD? Any chance of screenshots to compare?

I bought it in a store in Rotterdam, not on the i-net. Unfortunately my computer is old and can't read DVD's, otherwise I would surely have provided some screenshots.

I picked up Ultra DVD too. It may very well be better than what else is available, but still it's not for collection. If Tiger DVD is similar, that's to be avoided as well. May be it's (Tiger) better??
It may be from film print, but it' from really worn out (Ghisa Pita) film print. Some scenes have better colors and some faded and with scratches. (It's field averaged as well). Tons of hiss and crackles in audio.

Abruptly cut and or missing dialogs. I know it because I have the VHS as well.

More comparison shots from the PAL Russian DVD...

The transfer is from two sources - the dubbed Russian print and what looks like the Ultra print. The Russian print had many missing scenes (including two songs), so the DVD inserts some of the cut scenes back in but with a big drop in quality.

Only a Russian 2.0 dubbed track available. :(

Any more info/ website for PEN DVD company ??

Recent Kahaani DVD has Viacom-18 & PEN logos on it. I think, many of Viacom-18 DVDs have been Progressive DVDs, like Kahaani.

Is it Viacom-18 or is it PEN, the reason behind good PQ DVDs ?? Or do both Cos collaborate ??

Got PEN version. Thanks Arsh.

It's excellent print. It's Pseudo Prog with 3-2 Pull Down avail (hence no 4% speed up).

1982 Film CC shows 4647 meters (169.5 min). DVD is 162.5 min. (Only 7 min missing from orig release). If I recall correctly, Ultra & Tiger versions are not full 169 min either ??.
Esquire VHS is 168.6 min (has 3-2 pull down & hence no 4% speed up).

Quote:
Start to 1st song: 22:15 VHS vs 21:21 PEN DVD (54 sec discrepancy)

Start 1st song to start 2nd song: 48 min VHS vs 46:14 PEN DVD (106 sec discrepancy)

Start 2nd song to start 3rd song: 28 min VHS vs 23:50 PEN DVD ( 4 min 10 sec discrepancy)

Start 3rd song to start 4th song: 18:48 VHS vs 18:45 PEN DVD (no discrepancy here)

Start 4t song to start 5th song: 21:10 VHS vs 20 min PEN DVD (1 min 10 sec discrepancy)

Start 5th song to end of the film: 29:55 VHS vs 29:09 PEN DVD (46 sec discrepancy)

I have observed, PEN dvd quality is much better than most of other Indian DVDs.
eg. Sholay on PEN is far better than Sholay on Moser Bear and Raj.
Same goes for many more Sippy movies.

Sorry, was still half asleep when I posted these - they are apparently from an HDTV rip posted on Desitorrents. Not sure which channel this was shown on though.

This version is taken from an HDTV recording, most likely one telecast on Zee Cinema. You can see a logo that has been erased on the top right corner.
This version is definitely sped up by 4%. It runs at 161 minutes, which is about the same run time as the PEN DVD. But the DVD is not sped up. I wonder what the extra scenes on the HDVT recording are.
