K3G brought this to mind. Kareena is dressed in outfits that NOBODY in the west would wear, except maybe prostitutes or strippers. And it's presented as if that was normal attire for college students. If nothing else, if she's in London dressed that way, she's FREEZING!

No wonder people in India think so little of us Western women.

I think Pagalchand, first of all this genre permits this kind of stupidity. Overly rich people who have nothing to do except sing dance and cry-nothing wrong in that in fact I love it e.g KKHH. You must remember nobody takes this movies seriously anyway except some Indians overseas and all the people in India.
:D

Representation of women on Indian cinema is quite bad, with exception to limited amount of movies like Astitva, Zubediaa, Hari Bhari, Godmother, Dushman etc...(but even then the women have to go through some sort of redemption = which is quite negative)

Its only the masala/comericial films that seem to give not only NRI's a bad name but the whole conception of western culture. Its quite contradicting as the ultra basis for eastern consumer lifestyle, especially in India, is now on the ideals of westernism.

But the counter argument (which I agree in) is that the films serves as escapist vaule, when people can come in an enjoy a new world for three (or in some cases four hours). Women and men are beautiful, wearing expensive clothes, and have a vivid lifestlye which many can only dream of. Thier representation is something we don't take to heart as deeply.

Another idelogy was that NRI women dressed in revealing clothes is a way for men to be 'excited' in a soft porn sort of way without the sex.

Have you ever been to see an Indian film when the men cheer and wolf-whisle during certain female dances or introduction of the actress. I can safely say its not becuase of their talent.

Sad really...

I'm sure there will be a film which will show us NRI's as real characters. I was hoping the asian talent in shows like Mr & Mrs Kumar at 55 and Goodness Gracious Me on the BBC would help but in fact these comedies aren't as good, and are highly overestimated.

Yes, I know it was a joke. And it was a funny one. Which apparently my reply wasn't...
